Selecting a mover, and preparing for your next move.

HOW TO SELECT A MOVER

With so many moving companies to choose from, how do you know which mover will provide you with the most customized service to fit all your specific needs? There are many ways that you can narrow your choices down.

Moving Related Organizations

The Department of Transportation or DOT is the government agency responsible for the licensing of all interstate movers. It is important that you check with the DOT in order to see that your potential moving company has the authority to provide relocation services within the United States. The DOT keeps records on each moving companies’ liability and cargo insurance and makes sure that each company is sufficiently prepared to operate safely. A good status with the DOT will ensure you have chosen a safe, licensed mover to ship your goods across country. http://www.dot.gov/

The California Moving and Storage Association or CMSA is a non-profit trade association with more than 500 California moving companies as members. Basically, CMSA’s purpose is to create a standard amongst movers in the relocation industry. As a member, each mover must be licensed and work towards the “Code of Ethics” of the CMSA. Because the CMSA holds its members to such a high standard of excellence, you can be safe in knowing that the moving company is honest, legal, and efficient in their service. You can view their website to find helpful information or see their solid group of member companies. http://www.thecmsa.org/

Family and Friends

Who can you trust more to give you the most honest information than your friends and relatives? Ask those close to you for any recommendations or words of caution. When you are choosing a mover, you are basically giving them your precious belongings and trusting them to transport them safely across town or across country. Trust the ones you have known a long time or those who have the most experience with relocating.

Get An Estimate

Due to increased technology over the web, it is easier for customers to compare moving companies and their prices. Moving directories and company websites all have forms where you can fill out your move details. Moving companies will then send you an estimated price based on your move details. Of course, price should not be the only factor in choosing a great moving company, but it is a determining factor nonetheless. Make sure you do the necessary background check and ask the necessary questions in order to choose the best moving company for you.
